Antique European Clock Peddler Figural Clock – Cast Metal – c.1890–1920

An unusual antique European Clock Peddler or Uhrenträger figural clock, believed to date from the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890–1920.

The substantial painted cast-metal figure depicts a traditional travelling clock seller dressed in period costume, complete with broad-brimmed hat, jacket, breeches, stockings and walking cane.

Mounted prominently against his chest is a mechanical clock with Roman numeral dial, housed within a wonderfully decorative floral-painted clock case. Additional clockmaking accessories hang from the figure's side, completing the traditional clock-peddler appearance.

Clock peddler figures are associated with the historic Central European and Black Forest clock trade, when travelling merchants carried clocks from manufacturing districts to customers throughout Europe.

This example has an attractive aged appearance, with extensive hand-painted detailing and a substantial stepped rectangular base.
