An authentic British-made Walker’s “Cherub” Mark III mechanical ship-log, manufactured by the renowned nautical instrument makers Thomas Walker & Son Ltd of Birmingham, England.
This fascinating instrument represents traditional maritime navigation technology from the days before electronic speed and distance-measuring equipment.
Designed to record the distance travelled by a vessel through water, the ship-log operated using a rotating impeller towed behind the vessel. The resulting rotation was transmitted mechanically to the instrument's precision counting mechanism.
The instrument features an attractive circular dial with three pointers, housed in a substantial brass and metal casing, together with an adjustable mounting bracket.
The original manufacturer's engravings remain visible, including:

The engraved body also carries the manufacturer's patented design markings, anchor trademark and original maintenance instructions.
Good original vintage display condition, showing wear consistent with age and previous use.
The brass and metal surfaces exhibit tarnishing, scratches, oxidation and areas of finish deterioration.
The dial and three pointers are present, with the original lettering and graduated scales visible.
Mechanical operation has not been tested. The instrument is offered in its present condition as a collectible maritime artefact.
The towing line, trailing rotator and original storage box are not included.
An interesting addition to any collection of maritime antiques, early navigation equipment or British precision instruments.
Also suitable as a decorative display piece for a nautical-themed office, study, library, yacht club or maritime collection.
Inspection welcome by arrangement.
An attractive survivor from the era of traditional mechanical marine navigation.
