Midday Cityscape – Whilst the Outback Is Burning presents a distant metropolitan skyline beneath an extraordinary darkened sky.

Rather than depicting a conventional bright midday cityscape, Nicholls contrasts the muted architectural forms of the city with a dense, smoke-laden atmosphere of deep brown, charcoal, ochre and burnt red.

The work takes its inspiration from the remarkable transformation of Australian skies during major bushfires, when smoke carried across immense distances can turn daylight into an eerie, almost nocturnal landscape.

Against the dark foreground, small streaks of light suggest movement through the city while the skyline appears illuminated by the strange filtered light of the smoke-filled atmosphere.
