Description

An exceptionally unusual piece of Cold War surveillance technology, this genuine Protona Minifon covert wrist microphone was deliberately disguised as a gentleman's chronograph wristwatch.

Produced in West Germany during the height of the Cold War, the device was designed for discreet recording using the celebrated Protona Minifon miniature recording system.

Although outwardly resembling an elegant chronograph, this is not a functioning wristwatch. The watch-form case conceals a microphone rather than a conventional timekeeping movement, while the dial, hands, crown, pushers and subsidiary registers provide the convincing appearance of a period chronograph.

A concealed cable exits the case at approximately 9 o'clock. When used, this cable could be passed discreetly beneath the wearer's sleeve and connected to a Minifon recorder concealed beneath clothing or carried on the body—an arrangement documented on surviving complete Protona surveillance systems.

The stainless-steel case back incorporates sound apertures allowing sound to reach the concealed microphone and is marked:

PROTONA – DBP 1025937 – MINIFON

The same marking is independently recorded on surviving examples of this specialised surveillance microphone.
