Description
An exceptionally unusual early 20th-century Japanese silver clock modelled as Daikoku's legendary magic mallet (Uchide no Kozuchi), traditionally associated with wealth, prosperity and good fortune.
The finely worked silver body is formed as Daikoku's mallet, with the surface skilfully chased to simulate natural wood grain. The handle is extensively decorated with engraved floral motifs and contrasting decorative metalwork.
Inset into one end is an original Japanese 8-day mechanical clock, with cream dial, Arabic numerals and elegant blued-style hands. The dial carries the manufacturer's trademark and “8 DAY” designation.
The piece is marked GINSEI (銀製), denoting manufacture in silver.
Similar Japanese silver Daikoku mallet clocks fitted with Seikosha, Tokyo movements have been documented by Christie's.
