Tugsbaatar Daramsuren — The Senses, 2016

Born in Erdenet, Mongolia, Daramsuren is a professional artist whose practice encompasses both representational and abstract painting. He has held multiple solo exhibitions and has spoken specifically of his preference for abstract art and the exploration of colour.

In The Senses, an intense field of luminous yellow surrounds a densely worked central structure of burgundy, black, violet, red and blue.

Scratched surfaces, layered pigment and gestural marks give the central form an almost architectural quality, while projecting blocks of colour interrupt the composition and create a strong sense of movement.

The contrast between the expansive yellow field and the heavily worked central passage gives the painting considerable visual impact, particularly at its substantial 90 × 100 cm scale.
