Victorian Figured Mahogany Writing Slope – c.1850–1870

Handsome Victorian travelling writing slope, crafted in beautifully figured mahogany and dating to approximately c.1850–1870.

The substantial rectangular case is fitted with brass corner protectors, brass reinforcement straps, a shaped brass key escutcheon and a vacant brass cartouche to the lid.

Opening the case transforms it into an inclined portable writing desk, a form widely used during the 19th century by travellers, military officers, merchants and professional people for writing correspondence while away from a permanent desk.

The interior incorporates a large blue writing surface with gilt-lined border, together with fitted compartments for writing implements and accessories.

The richly figured mahogany displays particularly attractive colour and grain and has developed an appealing patina through age and use.

Condition: Good antique condition with expected marks, wear and patination consistent with approximately 150–175 years of age. Some interior components or accessories may be absent. Please refer to photographs as part of the condition description.
