Vintage S.U.C. Watch Crystal Inserting Pliers & 8 Dies Boxed Watchmaker Tool USA
$300.00
Description
Rare early Standard Unbreakable Watch Crystals Inc. (S.U.C.), New York, USA professional watchmaker’s round crystal inserting set, believed to date from approximately the late 1920s–1930s.
This is an original specialist horological tool designed for installing round unbreakable watch crystals into wristwatch and pocket-watch bezels.
The set is particularly attractive because it remains in its original fitted wooden case and retains the original illustrated factory instruction label:
“The A B C of Round Crystal Inserting”
The instructions explain the original S.U.C. process of measuring the bezel, selecting the appropriate crystal size, positioning the crystal in the corresponding die/block, compressing it with the special pliers and inserting it into the watch bezel.
Included
- Original S.U.C. crystal inserting/compression pliers
- 8 original graduated S.U.C. circular crystal dies/blocks
- Multiple crystal-size settings incorporated into the dies
- Original adjustable pressure/support plate
- Original fitted wooden storage case
- Original “ABC of Round Crystal Inserting” illustrated instruction label
- All components shown in the photographs
The dies are genuine period S.U.C. components and are marked “Standard Unbreakable Watch Crystals Inc. – New York, N.Y.” Various size graduations remain visible, with some components also carrying early PAT. PEND. markings.
Importantly, these are graduated multi-size dies rather than one die for each individual crystal size. The eight dies therefore accommodate a substantially larger range of crystal sizes than their number might initially suggest.
The eight dies appear to form a coherent graduated set. Although there are spaces within the fitted case, these should not be assumed to represent missing dies.
Condition & Completeness
Very good original vintage workshop condition considering its age, with appropriate surface wear and patina from professional use.
The wooden case retains attractive age and character, and the survival of the original illustrated operating instructions is a particularly nice feature.
The separate S.U.C. measuring gauge referred to in the original instructions is not present.
Otherwise, the principal components of the crystal-inserting system appear to be present. As the set is approaching a century old, absolute original factory completeness cannot be guaranteed and it is sold exactly as photographed.
Standard Unbreakable Watch Crystals Inc. was operating in New York by 1927, when documentary records show the company supplying its proprietary measuring gauge and round-crystal sizing system to the watch trade.
An excellent piece for a watchmaker, horologist, watch collector, vintage watch repairer, antique-tool collector or horological workshop display.
